Harrisburg, PA -- The Broad Street Market Alliance (“Market”) announced today that it has been awarded a $500,000 grant from Governor Shapiro’s administration to make long-needed investments in the Market’s physical infrastructure. The funding has been made available by Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding through the Pennsylvania Fresh Food Financing Initiative.
Secretary Redding announced a total of $3.4 million in Fresh Food Financing Initiative grants, which help connect low-income communities with fresh, healthy, affordable food. The Broad Street Market will have until June 30, 2026 to expend the funds on facility improvements in the Stone Building, which currently lacks air conditioning, has failing heating systems, insufficient insulation, and regularly-occurring roof leaks.
“We are so grateful to Governor Shapiro and his administration for making this historic investment in the Broad Street Market,” said Eric Hagarty, Chair of the Market’s Board of Directors. “Alongside a previously-received $350,000 grant from the Department of Community & Economic Development secured by Senator Patty Kim and Representative David Madsen, last week’s announcement of a $75,000 gaming grant, and our continued financial progress, this grant will be a true game-changer for our vendors and community which will allow us to make major improvements to the Market’s existing Stone Building - giving the community the Market it truly deserves.”
Despite the fire that damaged the Brick Building in 2023, the Stone Building remains open for business Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM; the Tent is open Thursdays and Fridays from 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM and Saturdays from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
